lq-12 0.3.0 is out for macOS

The first paid release is ready: eight tracks for chopping, sequencing, processing and resampling without turning the computer into a DAW.

by Darren

Today I put lq-12 into the world properly.

Version 0.3.0 is now available for macOS. It is the first paid release and the first version where the whole idea feels joined up: load a sample, cut it into useful pieces, sequence those pieces into something new, wear the result in with DIRT, resample it and go around again.

What is in 0.3.0

lq-12 has eight audio tracks, each with its own sequence and a length of up to 64 steps. Tracks can run at different lengths, any step can choose another sound from the shared sample pool, and pitch, start, end, level, pan and DIRT can change step by step.

Chop mode turns a longer recording into playable slices. The slices are sounds rather than fixed positions in the sequence, so you can find the kick, snare or strange bit you actually want and place it wherever it belongs. Resampling closes the loop by turning the current result into new material.

Mac first

This release runs on macOS 11 or later. The download is a universal build for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, signed and notarised so it behaves like a proper Mac application should.

Windows and Linux builds exist and are being tested on their own platforms. I will release them when that work is complete rather than treating the Mac build as proof that everything is fine everywhere.

An early release, not a finished story

lq-12 is useful now, but it is not pretending to be a finished 1.0. There will be rough edges and some parts will change as I keep using it and hear from the people making music with it.

The price is €15. That feels right for where the instrument is today: enough to support the work, while keeping it affordable enough to try without turning it into a major decision.
